About Me!

So, you want to know a few things about me!
My name is Melissa Ward. I serve as the Title I and ESL Coordinator for HMS. I teach 3 elective classes, Introduction to Yearbook Journalism, ELA 7 Connections, and ELA 8 Connections. My afternoon schedule will be a "Push In/Pull Out" program this year, so my schedule will be based on student need. I will work with fifth and sixth grade "At Promise" students in reading and math. I enjoy teaching and believe that all students can learn.  I am a life-long learner and love learning about new ways to teach my students. My personal mission in life is to treat every child that I work with the way that I would want my children treated.
I am a native of South Carolina and a loyal South Carolina Gamecock!  I grew up in Greenville, SC and Reynolds, GA. Greenville is huge and Reynolds is small, but I love both places! I think I had the best of both worlds. My brothers live in South Carolina, and my Mama lives in Georgia. You know the saying, "Home is where your Mama is?" Well, that's true. Home for me is Georgia, and I spend a lot of time there.
The two very best things that have ever happened to me are my children, Rachel and Ryan. Both of my children attend Holtville schools. I have been lucky to teach both of my children. I enjoy spending time with my children, and I'm lucky that they aren't 'too cool' yet to show Mama some love!
I am still training to run in my first 5K. It's been a slow go because I'm a bit of a klutz, and stairs seem to like to trip me. I've had several bouts of not being able to jog (I'm not a runner yet), due to these mean ole stairs. I am a book nerd and love reading many different genres. I like to cook, and I would like to learn how to decorate cakes. I really would like to learn how to play the guitar I got for Christmas five years ago! I enjoy spending time at the lake and beach, going to football games, learning to be tech savvy (I'm trying), and visiting with family and friends.
We had a new member join our family in May.

Her name is Luna Lovegood (Yes, after the character in Harry Potter. I LOVE Harry Potter!). She is a blue pitbull. She is super sweet. She is now almost 5 months old and weights over 30 pounds. Luna definitely keeps the three of us on our toes.

Education:  I attended Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus, GA. Americus is close to President Carter's hometown of Plains and the home of Habitat for Humanity. When I was a little girl, I wanted to be a Radio City Music Hall Rockette. That didn't work out as I'm only 5 feet 2 inches tall, so I enrolled in the Nursing Program in 1991. After a couple of clinicals, I realized that nursing didn't have my heart. I changed my major to Education and I haven't looked back! I graduated with a B.S. in Education from Georgia Southwestern State University in 1996.
This year, I will once again become the student. I will begin my Master's in Education at the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB). I enrolled in the English Language Learners program. I will be taking two classes this fall.
I currently hold the following certifications:
English Language Arts 6-12
Special Education: P-12 Mentally Retarded and Learning Disabled
Highly Qualified Teacher status:
